This locomotive was built by H.K.Poter of U.S.A. in 1880. In 1880, the first railway of Hokkaido District, Horonai wailway was opened between Temiya and Sapporo. It was the 2nd number locomotive of Horonai railway. The locomotive of the Horonai railway named the name of famous person in Japanese history. They were named "Yoshitsune", "Benkei" and "Shizuka" etc. "Yoshitsune" is the hero of the tragedy who existed in the 12th century. "Benkei" is the faithful knight of "Yoshitsune". After the Horonai railway was nationalized, this locomotives was changed to 7100 class. Because they had the famous name, this 3 locomotives is preserved now.
