Banjaratma Sugar Factory Locomotives

The Banjaratma Sugar Factory, formerly located in Brebes Regency, Central Java, was one of the large-scale sugar factories established during the Dutch colonial period. Constructed in the early twentieth century and commencing operations in the 1910s, the factory played an important role in the sugar industry of colonial Java.
To transport sugarcane from the surrounding plantations to the mill, an extensive industrial railway network was developed. After the Second World War, the factory was nationalized and continued operations under Indonesia’s state-controlled sugar production system. However, operations ceased in the late 1990s, and following its closure, the factory complex was left abandoned for many years, with only massive brick buildings and rusting equipment remaining. In recent years, the historic structures have been preserved and repurposed, and the site has been redeveloped as a heritage-themed highway rest area.
