JNR D62 Class Steam Locomotive

This type of locomotive was built to cope with the increase in freight traffic during the war. The D52's rear bogie was converted to a two-axle design to reduce the axle weight, allowing it to be used on lines with lower track strength. From 1950 to 1951, 20 D52s were converted into D62s at the Hamamatsu Works. It was the first locomotive with a 2-8-4 axle arrangement in Japan. They were initially used on the Tokaido Main Line and later moved to the Tohoku Main Line, where they remained until 1966. Unfortunately, none of them have been preserved.
